This is why many people also call it Nha Tho Nga Sau, meaning the Six-Way Church. The location is effortless to find. You will likely pass by it at least once during your trip to Nha Trang.

    A Brief History

The story of this church begins in the late 1800s. At that time, there were only a small number of Catholics in Nha Trang. They had no proper church to worship in.

They had to travel far to Quy Nhon for religious services. Someone built a small chapel near the beach. The structure was only temporary.

In the early 1900s, a French Catholic priest named Father Louis Vallet arrived in Nha Trang. He was a humble and dedicated man. He worked hard to grow the local Catholic community. His goal was to build a church for the people of Nha Trang.

Construction officially started on September 3, 1928. The building site was on top of Bong Hill. Workers had to flatten the hill before construction could begin.

Workers used around 500 explosives to level the hilltop. This created a flat area of about 4,500 square meters for the church.

The construction took several years. In February 1933, Emperor Bao Dai visited the site during one of his tours. They were still building the church at that time.

Officials dedicated it on May 14, 1933, during the feast of Saint Jeanne d’Arc. Father Louis Vallet chose Christ the King as the patron of the church. This is where the official name comes from.

They completed the bell tower on December 3, 1935. The church became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Nha Trang in 1960. Since then, it has played an important role in the Catholic community of central Vietnam.

Father Louis Vallet passed away on October 24, 1945. They buried him at the foot of the hill, just to the right of the path leading up to the church. His tomb is still there today. Many visitors stop to pay their respects.

Gothic Architecture in a Tropical City

The Nha Trang Stone Church is a fine example of Gothic architecture. This style was extremely popular in Europe from the 12th to the 16th century. The designer created the church in the Western church style. It stands out clearly against the tropical sky of Nha Trang.

The building has a strong and solid look. The structure rises from a wide base and gets narrower toward the top. The highest point is the cross on top of the bell tower. It stands 38 meters above street level.

The outer walls look like someone made them from cut stone. Many people think builders constructed the whole church from stone.

In reality, brick walls covered with cement make up the structure. They use the stonework only for the pathways and the courtyard. This is why the church has a grey stone appearance.

The bell tower holds three large bronze bells. The famous Bourdon Carillond company made these bells in France. Someone blessed the first bell on July 29, 1934. Someone blessed the other two bells in 1939.

A large clock is also on the bell tower. It has four faces pointing in four different directions. For many years, locals looked at this clock to check the time.

    Inside the Church

The interior of the church is peaceful and beautiful. The main hall is wide and filled with natural light. Two rows of wooden pews line the center aisle. The aisle leads directly to the main altar.

At the altar, there is a statue of Christ the King in the center. Statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph stand on either side. Above the altar is a large mosaic painting. It shows Jesus with open arms welcoming the faithful.

The church has a four-pointed ribbed vault ceiling. The walls, columns, and arches are all made from carefully cut stone blocks. The craftsmanship is detailed and impressive.

One of the most beautiful features is the stained glass windows. Large round rose windows sit below the bell tower. From inside the church, the colored glass creates a stunning display of light.

In the morning and afternoon, sunlight passes through the blue and red glass. It fills the hall with warm and colorful light. The effect looks truly magical.
