Vietnam Weather
Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometers from north to south, and that geography shapes everything, including the weather. The country has no single “best season.” While March to May generally offers the most pleasant conditions across all regions, each part of Vietnam follows its own climate rhythm. Understanding those rhythms is the key to planning a trip where the weather works for you, not against you. This page breaks down the climate for Vietnam’s most popular destinations, city by city, so you can plan smarter.
Northern Vietnam
Hanoi

- Best time to visit: April to June, September to November
- Rainy season: June to August
Hanoi has four distinct seasons, a rarity in Southeast Asia and one of the things that makes it so atmospheric. The best times to visit are April to June and September to November, when skies are clear and temperatures are comfortable at 25 to 30°C. Summers (June to August) are hot and humid with heavy afternoon rain. Winters (December to March) are surprisingly cold by Southeast Asian standards, with temperatures dropping to around 10°C on the coldest nights, so pack a jacket.
Ha Long Bay

- Best time to visit: April to June, September to November
- Storm season: June to August
The ideal time to cruise Ha Long Bay is April to June or September to November, when you get the best combination of clear skies and comfortable temperatures. During the summer storm season, tropical storms are a real possibility and cruise cancellations do happen. In the misty winter months, the famous limestone karsts are half-hidden in fog, which many travelers find just as stunning as a sunny day. Avoid January on the water unless you are prepared for genuinely cold conditions.
Sapa

- Best time to visit: April to June, October
- Cold season: December to March
Sapa sits at altitude, and that changes everything. This mountain town is significantly colder than the rest of the country, particularly from late December through March, with occasional snowfall in January. Late April is a beautiful time to visit: wildflowers bloom, skies are clear, and trekking conditions in the surrounding valleys are excellent. Early October is equally special, when the famous terraced rice paddies turn gold in the weeks before harvest, one of the most photographed landscapes in all of Vietnam.
Central Vietnam
Hue

- Best time to visit: March to August
- Rainy season: September to February
Hue’s weather is shaped by its position just south of the Hai Van Pass. From September through February, the city sees its rainy season with temperatures dropping to around 15°C in January and occasional flooding in October and November. From March onward, the weather transforms: by July, Hue reaches highs of around 35°C with full summer sunshine, perfect for exploring the Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, and pagodas, or heading to the nearby beaches of Thuan An and Lang Co.
Nha Trang

- Best time to visit: January to August
- Rainy season: September to December
Nha Trang enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year, more than anywhere else in Vietnam, and even its rainy season (September to December) is the country’s shortest and most manageable. For the vast majority of the year, Nha Trang is a reliably sunny beach destination with pleasant temperatures, cooling sea breezes, and calm clear water. July and August are the hottest months, but they are also prime beach season, so expect more crowds alongside the sunshine.
Da Lat

- Best time to visit: November to March
- Rainy season: April to October
Perched in the central highlands at around 1,500 meters above sea level, Da Lat enjoys cool, crisp air year-round that sets it apart from every other destination in Vietnam. Temperatures rarely dip below 15°C in January or climb above 30°C in July, making it a popular escape from the coastal heat. The dry season from November through March is the most comfortable time to explore the city’s flower farms, pine forests, and waterfalls, though even the rainy season brings only brief afternoon showers and extraordinary greenery.
Southern Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta

- Best time to visit: December to April
- Rainy season: May to November
Southern Vietnam has no winter. Ho Chi Minh City runs at a near-constant 30°C year-round and the only real variable is whether it is wet season or dry season. From December through April, skies are clear, days are hot and bright, and this is peak travel season for a reason. From May through November, the wet season brings a reliable afternoon downpour rather than all-day rain, with mornings usually fine and showers clearing within a few hours. The Mekong Delta is particularly lush and alive during this time, and the flooded rice fields make for a striking sight.
Phu Quoc

- Best time to visit: October to June
- Storm season: July to September
Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island and its most celebrated beach destination. For most of the year it delivers warm water, white sand, and sunshine, with December and January being particularly ideal: dry, breezy, and beautiful. October marks the return of clear skies after the rainy months, making it a great shoulder-season option with fewer crowds and lower prices. July through September is the period to approach with caution, as storms roll through regularly, ferries can be disrupted, and the sea is not always safe for swimming.
