Quang Tri

Explore the Vinh Moc Tunnels

The Vinh Moc Tunnels are among the most remarkable feats of human endurance in Vietnam’s wartime history. Dug entirely by hand to escape relentless American bombing, this underground village stretches nearly 2 kilometres through three floors up to 23 metres below ground. Entire families lived here for years, and 17 children were born inside the tunnels. Unlike the Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Moc requires no crawling. The experience is sobering, fascinating, and deeply moving.

Visit the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel

Situated beside the Thach Han River, the Quang Tri Citadel was the site of one of the war’s most ferocious battles. In 1972, the 81-day siege left it almost entirely in ruins. Today, the crumbling walls and scarred ramparts stand as a powerful memorial to those who fell here. The surrounding grounds also serve as an unofficial cemetery for soldiers whose remains were never recovered. It is a place that demands quiet reflection.

Pay Respects at Truong Son National Cemetery

Truong Son is the largest war cemetery in Vietnam. It is the final resting place of more than 10,000 soldiers who gave their lives along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Rows of white headstones stretch across a hillside beneath a solemn memorial tower. For many Vietnamese visitors, this is a deeply spiritual pilgrimage. For international travellers, it offers a profound and humbling perspective on the human cost of the conflict.

Cross the Ben Hai River at Hien Luong Bridge

The Ben Hai River and the Hien Luong Bridge once marked the 17th Parallel, the boundary dividing North and South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. Standing on this bridge today, with the river flowing quietly below, it is hard to imagine that this peaceful spot was once the most politically charged border in Asia. A small museum nearby documents the division and reunification of the country with photographs and artefacts.

Relax at Cua Tung Beach

Away from the war memorials, Quang Tri has a quieter, more natural side. Cua Tung is a beautiful and relatively uncrowded beach in the Vinh Linh district, where the Hien Luong River meets the sea. The water is clear and the sand is fine. It is a popular spot with local families in summer, but remains far less developed than the beaches further south. Fresh seafood at the small restaurants nearby is reason enough to linger.

Venture Out to Con Co Island

About 30 kilometres offshore, Con Co is a small volcanic island with a history as dramatic as the mainland. It earned the title “Heroic Island” for its role in the war. Today, 70 percent of the island is covered in ancient forest. Coral reefs, including rare red coral found nowhere else in Vietnam, ring the shoreline. Con Co is slowly developing as an eco-tourism destination, and visiting now feels like catching it before the crowds arrive.

Quang Tri has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons. The dry season runs from March to August, with April and May being the most pleasant months for travel. However, June and July bring the notorious Lao wind, a hot dry wind from the west that can push temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. The rainy season runs from September to February, with October and November seeing the heaviest rainfall and occasional storms. For the best combination of good weather and meaningful travel, visit in April or May, or in late August when conditions ease before the rains arrive.

Quang Tri has no commercial airport. The nearest is Phu Bai Airport in Hue, about 70 kilometres to the south, or Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Binh to the north. From either, a bus or taxi connects to Dong Ha, the provincial capital. Direct overnight buses also run to Dong Ha from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The train is another comfortable option, with Dong Ha station sitting on the main North-South line. Once in the province, taxis, motorbike taxis, and hired cars are the most practical ways to reach the more remote historical sites.
