Da Nang
Sitting midway along Vietnam’s coast, Da Nang is central Vietnam’s most energetic city. Long sandy beaches stretch along its eastern edge. Dramatic limestone mountains rise to the south, and forested hills roll away to the north. Beyond the scenery, Da Nang punches well above its weight on food, culture, and history. It also sits at the heart of Vietnam’s UNESCO heritage trail. Both Hoi An and Hue are less than an hour away. Whether you come for the beach, the street food, or as a base for the region, Da Nang tends to exceed expectations.
Top things to do in Da Nang
Relax on My Khe Beach
My Khe is one of the finest urban beaches in Southeast Asia. It stretches for several kilometres along the city’s eastern edge. The water is calm and clear, and the wide sandy shore is lined with cafes and seafood restaurants. Mornings are especially lively, with locals swimming and exercising at dawn. The beach is well set up for visitors, with roped swimming zones, sun loungers for hire, and easy access from most city centre hotels.
Explore the Marble Mountains
About 10 kilometres south of the city, the Marble Mountains are a cluster of five limestone and marble outcrops. Each is named after one of the five natural elements. Inside the largest, Thuy Son, a network of caves hides ancient Buddhist shrines carved directly into the rock. Climb to the summit for sweeping views over the coast. Alternatively, take the lift and save your energy for the caves themselves.
Ride up to Ba Na Hills and Walk the Golden Bridge
Ba Na Hills is a mountain resort at 1,487 metres above sea level. It is reached by one of the world’s longest cable car rides. At the top, the Golden Bridge is the star attraction. This pedestrian walkway is held aloft by two giant stone hands and appears to float above the jungle canopy. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and improve your chances of clear skies.
Discover the Cham Museum
The Museum of Cham Sculpture holds the largest collection of Cham artefacts in the world. It covers the period when the Champa Kingdom ruled central Vietnam between the 4th and 13th centuries. The sculptures range from intricate stone altars to monumental statues of Hindu deities. It is a compact museum. However, the quality and significance of what is inside make it one of the most important cultural stops in central Vietnam.
Ride the Hai Van Pass
The Hai Van Pass connects Da Nang to Hue, winding over a 496-metre mountain ridge. The sea sits on one side and forested peaks on the other. By motorbike, it is one of the great road trip experiences in Vietnam. On a clear day, you can see Da Nang Bay curving south and the Hue coastline stretching north. The old French fort at the summit is also worth a short stop.
Eat Mi Quang and Explore the Street Food Scene
Da Nang has a street food culture that locals are fiercely proud of. Mi Quang is the city’s signature dish. It features thick turmeric-yellow noodles served with pork, shrimp, quail eggs, peanuts, and fresh herbs. Beyond Mi Quang, look out for banh trang cuon thit heo, bun cha ca, and fresh seafood grilled simply at the beachside restaurants along My Khe.
Da Nang Weather
Da Nang has two main seasons. The dry season runs from January to August, with February to May offering the most comfortable conditions for beach days and sightseeing. Summer (June to August) is hot and humid, though rain is rare and the sea is calm and clear. The rainy season runs from September to December, with October and November bringing the heaviest downpours and occasional typhoons. Nevertheless, even during the wet months, rain often falls at night rather than all day, leaving mornings and afternoons clear enough to get out and explore.
Best time to visit: March to May for ideal weather, fewer crowds, and the best beach conditions.
Da Nang Transport
Da Nang International Airport sits just 3 kilometres from the city centre. It connects directly to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and several international destinations. The city is also a stop on the national North-South railway. Once in Da Nang, taxis and the Grab app are the most convenient ways to get around. Motorbike rentals are widely available for those wanting more freedom. Hoi An is easily reached by taxi or hired car in around 45 minutes.
