Explore the Prison Museum Complex

Con Dao’s most important historical site is also one of the most sobering in all of Vietnam. The prison complex, built by the French in 1862 and later used during the American war, held thousands of political prisoners over more than a century. The infamous tiger cages, cramped stone cells barely large enough to stand in, are preserved here exactly as they were. A small museum outside provides essential context. Allow at least two hours, and go with an open mind.

Pay Respects at Hang Duong Cemetery

Around 20,000 Vietnamese prisoners died on Con Son Island during the colonial and war periods. Nearly 2,000 of their graves can be found at Hang Duong Cemetery on the eastern edge of town. Among them is Vo Thi Sau, a revered female martyr who became a symbol of resistance and is still visited daily by locals who bring flowers and incense. It is a quietly powerful place, and one of the most visited sites on the island.

Dive and Snorkel the Protected Reefs

Con Dao is widely regarded as the best diving destination in Vietnam. The waters surrounding the archipelago are fully protected within the national park, and visibility on calm days regularly reaches 20 to 30 metres. Over 1,300 species of marine life inhabit the reefs, alongside hard and soft corals in exceptional condition. There is also a rare diveable shipwreck in the area. Trek Through Con Dao National Park

Con Dao is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in Southeast Asia. Between June and September, green sea turtles come ashore each night on Hon Bay Canh Island to lay their eggs. Turtle nesting season runs from June to September, adding another reason to visit during these months. Con Dao Transport

The easiest and most reliable way to reach Con Dao is by direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City. The journey takes around 50 minutes, with daily departures operated by Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways. Ferries are also available from Vung Tau and Soc Trang on the mainland, though journey times range from 2.5 to 4 hours and rough seas can occasionally affect services. Once on the island, Con Son town is small and walkable. For beaches and outlying sights, motorbike rental is the most practical option. Bicycles are a good choice for shorter trips closer to town.
